Organic farmers do not use chemical herbicides. All weeding is done by tractor or by hand. Although we are not certified as organic, we adhere to the same standards for weed control by mechanical means. We discovered this cultivating tractor at the Agritechnica Show in Europe last fall. It does a terrific job of eliminating weeds in our row crops.
Our crew usually follows up to keep the fields weed free. As we work our fields, we find the weed pressure reduces after 2-3 years. We have the most difficulty in the fields we are transitioning from conventional farming to organic culture.
